Groceries are over 25% more expensive than three years ago. Doing the weekly shop the same way as 2022 means paying noticeably more in 2026 for the same amount — without anyone consciously choosing that. That's lever one: get awareness back.

Realistic target: 20–30% less per week, without losing quality, without couponing, without endless comparison-shopping. On a €100 weekly shop, that's €80–100 per month.

Where the money actually leaks

  • Branded products instead of own labels — 30–50% price gap, often identical production.

Each of these is small alone. Together they explain 80% of the gap between "honestly managed" and "not looking."

The five levers

1. Weekly plan, then list

Sunday evening, 15 minutes: what will you eat Mon–Sun. The list follows from it. In the shop, only list items. Spontaneous additions typically cost €8–15 per visit.

2. Test own-brand

For 80% of staples, own-brand is quality-identical — flour, milk, yoghurt, butter, pasta, canned goods, rice. Consumer testing has confirmed this repeatedly. Brand preference is worth keeping selectively (coffee, a few specialties), not blanket.

3. Never shop hungry

Sounds like a cliché, is measurable: studies show 20–30% higher basket totals when shopping hungry. If you can't avoid it: an apple, a roll, anything beforehand.

4. Bigger weekly shops over daily ones

One larger shop per week beats three small ones. Every store visit is an impulse-buy risk. Bonus: larger packs are cheaper per unit, where shelf life allows.

5. Leftovers as a habit

Plan a leftovers meal once a week as a fixed slot. A soup day, a pasta-with-what's-there, a casserole. Halves household food waste in most homes.

What doesn't work

  • Couponing as a strategy — the time investment beats the savings almost every time.

  • Driving to five supermarkets for 50 cents off each — mobility and time cost more.

  • Discount-only — if fresh-produce quality drops, you end up buying more and throwing more away.

Realistic expectation

Take the five levers seriously and the effect shows after three weeks. Not sooner — the weekly shop needs time to settle. After three weeks, most households are at €70–80 per person per week instead of €100–110. More is possible, but the time investment then exceeds the benefit.
